This is a very famous quote on Data by W. Edwards Deming who was a well renowned Statistician. When I first read this quote, my first reaction was “indeed”. We can trust only in what God says but other affirmations must be proved by data.
We ask people to back up their claims with data and no matter how unquestionable they may consider their authority to be we do not take their words seriously if data is not backing it up. So frankly, Highest Paid Person Opinion (HiPPO) in corporations does not matter anymore. The changing rule in CXO meetings is, “No statement is acceptable if it is not backed-up from enterprise Data warehouse (EDW).”
Business stakeholders want to know the answers of business problems. Such answers require detailed analysis that requires Data Management skills to build the relevant dataset. Analytical and decision modeling skills are required for discovering relationships within data and detecting patterns.
“Over the period of time, Applied Scientists have proved themselves as good Data Scientist”, commented by Stephen Brobst (CTO – TeraData). He further added, “A good Data Scientist is someone who thinks people are enemy as they stand between him and Data. In most cases, the enemy is DBA.”
As Gartner defines, “The data scientist role is critical for organizations looking to extract insight from information assets for “big data” initiatives and requires a broad combination of skills that may be fulfilled better as a team”.
A good Data Scientist must have the following traits foremost.
Data will have a big impact in our social life. Now it is about the quantity of data that is also changing the behavior of people. It has not only impacted the business but how business will be done in the future. People interested in analytics model must rethink how they want to contribute in the emerging management transformation areas.
